Iron ore is one of the most abundant metallic elements on earth. Extracted iron from mines cannot be directly used due to impurities, so it is processed by adding carbon and other elements. There are different types of iron ore such as hematite and magnetite.
Iron concentrate is one of the secondary products of raw iron ore, which is in the form of black powder. In order to increase the quality and grade of iron ore, complex methods are used, the steps of which are crushing, grinding, enrichment and dewatering. It should be noted that iron concentrate is one of the raw materials in the production of sponge iron pellets and briquettes.
Pellets are produced from raw iron ore and other additives, which then are cooked and hardened and used for reduction in the traditional method of iron production in a blast furnace or other methods. Since the iron concentrate cannot be consumed in its original physical form and causes problems in the direct reduction plant, therefore, should be converted into pellets. In other words, the goal of pelletizing plant is to convert iron concentrate into iron pellets with same shapes.
Sponge iron is obtained from iron ore reduction without melting. During the direct reduction process and due to the release of oxygen gas, the iron ore turns into spherical pieces like a sponge. This appearance is the reason for the special name of this product. Among the production methods, we can mention natural gas methods (the most famous one is Midrex) and thermal coal. read more
